It’s not just the frequency that governs whether a channel is in the UHF, VHF, or SHF band. It also has to do with how far away it can broadcast
. A UHF station might only be able to broadcast up to 20 miles from its tower while a VHF station could go as high as 200 miles and an SHF station could reach up to 50 miles. The higher the frequency, the shorter the range.
This is why UHF is paramount on the spectrum. It can reach more viewers than VHF or SHF with less infrastructure. Of course, that doesn’t mean that VHF and SHF aren’t important, they just have a smaller broadcast range.
